This email is also archived on the Student Services Blog, for future reference.

The Autumn Quarter 2015 Time Schedule is now available (All UW or FISH only) – registration begins on May 8. I’ve included a list of courses below that satisfy degree requirements, for reference.

  • MATH/CHEM/BIOL/PHYS
  • If you have started or completed the BIOL series, BIOL 180, 200 or 220 would be a good choice (since many upper division FISH courses have BIOL as a pre-req) – note that BIOL 200 has a pre-req of CHEM 152 or CHEM 220.
  • CHEM 120 is only offered in Summer and Autumn quarter – if you still need CHEM 120, be sure to take it in one of these quarters
  • Other good choices in Summer or Autumn quarter… PHYS 114, MATH 124 or 125, Q SCI 291 or 292
  • CHEM 142 and 152 is offered every quarter

STAT

  • Q SCI 381 is offered every quarter (pre-req MATH 120, Q SCI 190, or a 2 on Adv AP)

Physical World – Autumn quarter is a great time to take care of one of your Physical World classes:

Completing a Marine Bio minor? Consider taking these courses:

  • FISH/BIOL/OCEAN 250 – required for the minor, offered in Summer and Autumn
  • OCEAN 210 – required for the minor, only offered in Autumn

Other items that may be of interest:

  • Trying to register for a course that’s full? Check the course status often in case a space opens up – a good rule of thumb is to check as often as you check Facebook. Also, take a look at the UAA Advising Office’s Tips for Getting Into Closed Courses.
  • Seniors, don’t forget – if you want/need Graduating Senior Priority in Autumn Quarter, the deadline to submit a graduation application is May 6… Make an appointment to see me by May 4 to complete the paperwork in time for processing.
  • May 17 is the last day to change to or from S/NS grade option and/or to use your Annual Drop (Late Drop Period). $20 fee
  • Freshmen & Sophomores (and early Juniors)! Do you have a 3.3 (or higher) UW GPA? Then you should consider doing SAFS Departmental Honors! All it takes is one extra class and a few extra projects (in classes you’re already taking)… Interested? Read more here or make an appointment with me to declare!
  • More useful dates and deadlines: 2014-15 and 2015-16

Welcome Back AFS Majors! Autumn 2014 Things of Great Importance

Hi SAFS majors!

Well, it happened again – summer has come and gone. I hope you were all able to take time off from jobs, classes, etc. to lay around and enjoy the long, sunny days. Now that Autumn is here, I know that you’re all tired of rest and relaxation and ready to get back into the thick of your studies!

On that note, let’s get down to the important stuff – your quarterly reminder of things you need to know:

1) Autumn Graduation deadline is October 10
If you are planning on graduating in Autumn Quarter and have not already met with me to complete your graduation application, please do so as soon as possible! The final deadline is October 10 but if you want to make sure your application is on file with the Registrar by the deadline, it would be wise to make an appointment to see me by no later than October 8.

2) Winter 2015 Graduating Senior Priority deadline is October 29

What is Graduating Senior Priority?

If you are a graduating senior or post-baccalaureate student with a degree application on file in the Graduation and Academic Records Office, you may register on the first day of Registration Period I for your final two quarters. To get your degree application on file, make an appointment to see me sometime before October 29.

More deadlines listed below but see the UW Academic Calendar for a comprehensive listing.

3) Winter Registration begins November 7
Period 1 registration dates are listed below but may also be found here. The Winter quarter Time Schedule should be online by October 17 (subject to change).

If you would like to meet with me to discuss your Winter quarter schedule, email me to make an appointment – drop-ins are welcome, as usual, but please be aware that my schedule gets pretty full during registration. In preparation for any meeting in which we discuss degree requirements, please complete/update your AFS degree plan (workbook attached) or MyPlan and bring it with you to the meeting.

4) Send me your achievements!
As a department, we love to know when you achieve special recognition, especially in the field of aquatic and fishery sciences (but certainly not limited to that)… If you have received any scholarships or awards, been recognized for any services or achievements, given a presentation in a juried forum, been published in a scientific journal, etc. please share with us by completing the brief survey here. Besides beaming with pride, be aware that we may want to share your achievement in departmental publications (newsletter, website, etc.) The survey will be permanently open so that you can complete as often as needed.

5) FISH 498/499 Contracts are due 4pm, September 29

If you are planning on registering for credit in FISH 498 Internship or FISH 499 Independent Research in Autumn Quarter, be sure to get the completed forms to me by no later than 4pm on Monday, September 29 in order to avoid late registration fees. Forms turned in after 4pm on September 29 will still be processed for registration but I make no guarantees that it will happen before the beginning of the unrestricted drop period – any fees incurred will by your responsibility.
Be sure to review the enrollment procedures and download the 498 or 499 contract (also available here) and get started filling it out as soon as possible. Note that submission requires a written proposal and signature from a faculty adviser (and workplace supervisor, if applicable) – this takes time so don’t wait until the last minute. Incomplete contracts will be returned to you for completion before we will register you for the course – any late registration fees will be your responsibility.

6) Scholarship disbursement
If you receive a scholarship from SAFS, your scholarship will be disbursed sometime between now and the October 10 tuition payment deadline. These have to be manually entered and I will be getting to them as soon as I possibly can – thank you for your patience. If you need your scholarship to be disbursed sooner rather than later, please email me with your timeline.

7) Student Services Blog
Don’t forget to check the SAFS Student Services Blog for information on interesting courses, events, job opportunities, seminars, deadlines and general other miscellaneous interesting stuff.

8) Advising appointments this week and next week
Just

a heads up that my calendar fills up very quickly during the first week of the quarter – if you need to see me prior to any upcoming deadlines (such as Sept. 30, last day to change your schedule w/o a fee), be sure to make an appointment ASAP. If you have a quick question, you can try dropping by but for anything requiring more thoughtful conversation, your best bet is to schedule dedicated time to meet.

9) Email inquiries
As always,I am happy to answer your questions over email but in general, please allow at least two business days for a response before emailing me again – and remember that the advising offices are closed on the weekends so if you email on a Saturday or Sunday (or holiday), please give me a day or two back in the office to respond. I try to get back to everyone quickly but it can get pretty hectic around certain times of the quarter so your patience is truly appreciated. If you have an urgent issue that needs more immediate attention, mention that in your email and I’ll do my best to respond sooner.

Cheers,
Sam

AFSUW Mentorship Program for SAFS Undergraduate Majors

Dear SAFS Undergraduates,

Are you interested in a career in fisheries or a related field? Have you thought about going to graduate school, but aren’t sure which degree to apply for, where to go, or how to prepare? Every year, AFSUW sets undergrads up with graduate mentors who share their research interests. Graduate students are full of wisdom, and can really help you decide on / prepare for a successful career. This is a great opportunity to get valuable advice and form professional connections.

Our mentorship program seeks to foster social connections between University of Washington undergraduate and graduate students in Aquatic and Fishery Sciences. We organize two kinds of interactions to facilitate mentor-mentee relationships:

First, we host a quarterly social event that is open to all interested grad and undergrad students. Food (and beer, this fall!) is provided and grad student panels answer questions and discuss topics of interest to undergrads. This Fall’s mixer is on Tuesday October 29th at 6:30 pm but you don’t have to be at the mixer to sign up or to have a mentor!

Additionally, we pair groups of 1-2 undergrads with a grad student mentor. Mentors and mentees meet once a month to talk about school, research, and careers.

This is an excellent way to get a head start on your career and hear about the many options available to you. You can do it a flexible schedule, because mentors and mentees pick their own meeting times.

If you are interested in having a graduate mentor, please email me at siplem@uw.edu and I’ll send you materials to sign up.

Thank you very much,
Megsie Siple
AFSUW President

SAFS Majors: Summer/Autumn 2013 Courses and Registration Info

The Autumn Quarter 2013 Time Schedule is now available (All UW or FISH only) – registration begins on May 10. I’ve included a list of courses below that satisfy degree requirements, for reference.

  • MATH/CHEM/BIOL/PHYS
    • If you have started or completed the BIOL series, BIOL 180, 200 or 220 would be a good choice (since many upper division FISH courses have BIOL as a pre-req) – note that BIOL 200 has a pre-req of CHEM 220.
      • IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT BIOL 200 PRE-REQ: Starting in Summer 2013, BIOL 200 will no longer accept CHEM 152 as a pre-requisite. If you are taking CHEM 142 and plan to continue in the Gen Chem series, you will need to complete through CHEM 162 before you can register for BIOL 200. CHEM 220 is still accepted as a pre-req so students taking CHEM 120 or CHEM 142 should plan on taking CHEM 220, as usual. See me if you have any questions about this.
      • UPDATE! Those of you who have completed CHEM 152 with a 1.7 or higher may still be eligible to take BIOL 200 (w/o completing CHEM 162 first) – just pass the Chemistry Skills Quiz (available in early June). Questions?
    • CHEM 120 is only offered in Summer and Autumn quarter – if you still need CHEM 120, be sure to take it in one of these quarters
    • Other good choices in Summer or Autumn quarter… PHYS 114, MATH 124 or 125, Q SCI 291 (note that Q SCI 292 is also offered in Summer).
    • CHEM 142 is offered every quarter
  • STAT
    • Q SCI 381 is offered every quarter (pre-req MATH 120, Q SCI 190, or a 2 on Adv AP)
  • Physical World – Autumn quarter is a great time to take care of one of your Physical World classes:

    • OCEAN 210 Ocean Circulation (required for Marine Bio minor)
    • ATM S 211 Climate Change
    • OCEAN/ESS 230 Rivers and Beaches

    • PHYS 115 and 116 are both on the approved list of courses and are offered every quarter
  • Required FISH Courses – these courses are restricted to AFS majors only during Period 1. If you are a major and want to take these courses but know you won’t be able to register by the end of Period 1 then email me to discuss your options.
    • FISH 323 Conservation & Management of Aquatic Resources
    • FISH 340 Genetics & Molecular Ecology (pre-req BIOL 200)
  • NEW COURSE! FISH 290 Scientific Writing and Communication
    • This course will be required for anyone declaring the major in Autumn 2013 or later but all majors are strongly encouraged to take this course. It is currently listed in the TS as FISH 497, if you want to see the meeting details, but the course number will be changed to FISH 290 before registration begins.
  • Elective FISH Courses – remember, you need a minimum of 4 courses and 16 credits of 400-level FISH coursework
    • FISH 441 Environmental Physiology (3/5) – no pre-reqs but completion of FISH 324 is recommended
    • FISH 450 Salmon Behavior & Life History (3/5) – Seniors Only; no pre-reqs but completion of FISH 312 is recommended
    • FISH 452 Spatial Information Technology (3)
    • FISH 473 Limnology (3) (pre-req BIOL 180) No freshmen
  • FISH 498 Internship or 499 Research

It is recommended that you submit completed forms to me for an add at least two weeks prior to the start of the quarter – forms received after the start of the quarter will be accepted but I make no guarantees that you will be enrolled prior to the start of the Late Add Period ($20 fee).
  • Capstone
    • FISH 493 Capstone Prep is being offered in Autumn – if you plan to do your capstone research in the next three quarters (prior to Autumn Quarter 2014), then you must complete 493 prior to beginning your research.
      • FISH 493 now has a pre-requisite of FISH 290 (the new Scientific Writing class) – anyone signing up for the major in Autumn 2013 or later will have to meet this pre-req but those of you who are currently declared are grandfathered under the old rules (which didn’t require FISH 290).
      • To register for FISH 493, just email me with your student number and I will send you an add code (provided you are a junior or senior AFS major).
    • FISH 494 and 495 – see Greg Jensen to register; note that you must have already completed FISH 493 in order to register for either of these courses.
  • Completing a Q SCI minor? Consider taking these courses:
    • Q SCI 381 – required for both the AFS degree and the Q SCI minor
    • Q SCI 482 – required for the minor, only offered in Autumn and Winter
  • Completing a Marine Bio minor? Consider taking these courses:
    • FISH/BIOL/OCEAN 250 – required for the minor, offered in Summer and Autumn
    • OCEAN 210 – required for the minor, only offered in Autumn

  • May 19 is the last day to change to or from S/NS grade option and/or to use your Annual Drop (Late Drop Period). $20 fee

Finally, note that I will be out of the office May 28 – 31. If you anticipate any issues with registering for courses (or if you have had a hold placed on your registration for any reason), be sure to see me prior to May 24.

Cheers,
Sam
