SAFS in the News: Warming Favors Invasive Fish over Native Trout and Salmon

AFS grad student Erika Sutherland is featured in the June edition of the new Northwest Climate Magazine:

“Before Erika Sutherland was an aquatic ecologist, she was a fighter pilot.

‘One of the rare opportunities I had was to look down on the world, all over the world, and see impacts, including how many political problems were caused by the sharing of water,’ says Sutherland.”

profit corporation located in Talkeetna, Alaska. ARRI conducts water quality and fish habitat

research funded by state and federal agencies. Current projects include investigating fish use
and water quality in glacial rivers; the investigation of the influence of stream temperatures on
salmonid production; the effects of stormwater on fish habitat and water quality; juvenile

salmonid use of estuary habitats; the influence of motor boats on hydrocarbon concentrations,
turbidity, and the biological community; juvenile salmon distribution and growth rates; stream
habitat classification and fish habitat relationships; and the evaluation of the proposed Susitna-

Watana Hydroelectric Dam project. We are seeking a candidate that is pursuing a career in
aquatic ecology or fisheries.

Duties: Conduct field measures of water quality, juvenile fish abundance, and
macroinvertebrates; enter field data in Excel spreadsheets; conduct statistical analyses; conduct

literature reviews; and report writing. Assist field crews consisting of 1 or 2 field technicians,
interns and/or graduate students in the collection, recording and processing of water quality and
fish habitat data. Activities will include collecting samples of juvenile salmon and

macroinvertebrates; calibrating and deploying temperature and turbidity data loggers; obtaining
measures of stream discharge, slopes, substrate, and channel morphometry; measuring basic
water chemistry; collecting water samples for nutrient, hydrocarbon and metals analyses;

macroinvertebrate sample sorting and identification; organize, calibrate, and maintain field
sampling equipment; data entry and analysis. Traveling by 4WD truck, boat and/or 4-wheeler

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Aquatic Ecology, Fisheries Biology, Environmental

Science or closely related field. Must have experience in field sampling methods and the ability
